The official site of the Government of the Russian Federation has been launched in the Internet on December 27, 1999. The site's addresses are as follows: www.government.gov.ru and www.pravitelstvo.gov.ru ("government" in Russian is "pravitelstvo").

The launch of the governmental site testifies not only to the emergence of a new official information channel in the Internet but also to a new government information policy in principle. Now fresh governmental news becomes immediately available in the Internet for all its users.

The official site of the Government of the Russian Federation comprises three sections: "The Government of the Russian Federation", "The Federal Executive Bodies" and "The Press Center". The site reference sections provide biographies of the Prime Minister, the Cabinet Ministers and the federal executive leaders. The Ministries' pages contain the statute of the federal executive bodies, addresses and telephone numbers, links to the sites of the Ministries and departments.

The daily news updates under the headings "Official Chronicle" and "Press Releases" are the most popular pages of the site. Exclusive news appears on the pages earlier than in information agencies and on television.

The department of the governmental information maintains the site and has plans to extend it to comprise electronic versions of departmental editions, regulations, interviews of Ministers and heads of departments.
