Ericsson ADSL solution comes into operation in Russia

Three Russian companies, RUSLAN Communications, Nizhegorodsvyazinform, and Nizhegorod Information Networks, successfully deployed and tested ADSL access solution in Nizhnyi Novgorod city in Central Russia. RUSLAN Communications is the leading Russian specialist in ATM solutions, being both value-added reseller, hardware and software vendor. Nizhegorodsvyazinform owns and operates the local phone network. Nizhegorod Information Networks owns and operates metropolitan ATM backbone in the city. The solution is based on Ericsson ADSL products.

The project is a premiere of Ericsson ADSL solutions in Russia. New technology delivers the complete suite of modern digital telecommunication services to customers using a conventional copper pair. Ericsson ANxDSL system ensures high-speed internetworking, Internet access, and multimedia services by means of existing telephony-grade cabling. The downstream speed of the connection is as high as 8 Mbps, with upstream speed being 1 Mbps.

ADSL-based multiservice solution offers a unique set of services to corporate and individual customers throughout the city. Private businesses and governmental organizations will improve communication with remote offices, arrange videoconferences, build telemedicine and e-commerce systems. Individuals will view movies, easily surf across Internet, take part in online games along with making ordinary phone calls through the same line. The price of ADSL access, InfoArt notes, is more than two times lower than leased line connection.

Voice and data integration is provided by ADSL terminals installed in customers' premises. DSL access multiplexers (DSLAMs) at the central offices split voice and data on the other end of the line. Voice channels are then redirected to phone switch, and data are multiplexed into ATM streams with speeds ranging from 1.5 to 155 Mbps.
