Ericsson and TAIF TELCOM complete stage one of GSM network in Tatarstan

Ericsson and TAIF TELCOM companies announced completion of stage one of building a Santel GSM network in Republic of Tatarstan in Russian Federation. The network us based upon Ericsson products.

The joint project, totaling US$ 50 mln., calls for building one of the largest GSM networks in Russia. Once the entire project will be completed, the cellular communications network will cover 90% of the territory of Republic of Tatarstan, including big cities, district centers, and major highways. The solution will serve up to 100,000 subscribers.

The first stage of the Santel network includes 51 base station. By 2000, it will be increased to 160, with the network being expanded towards north and south of the republic. The final number of base stations will exceed 250.

Santel will also offer its subscribers a pack of add-on services, including SMS, voice mail, data and fax transmission, caller ID, call forwarding, waiting and blocking, conferencing, as well as automatic routing in Russia and 73 countries abroad.
