DPI Group, the official representative of Apple company in Russia, Belarus, Armenia and Georgia, announced receipt of export license for shipping the first lot of Apple PowerMac G4 computers to Russia. Thus Russia became the first country of what is called "the third group" - i.e., of the countries for which export license is mandatory - to obtain such license. Power Mac G4, announced by Apple in August 1999 at Seybold tradeshow, is the first personal computer with performance exceeding 1 bln. floating point operations per second (1 GigaFLOPs). According to US legislation, this performance puts Apple Power Mac G4 into a supercomputer category which is subject to governmental export control on export to "third group" countries. Apple is said to take a number of efforts to speed up the procedure and to obtain the license for shipping Power Mac G4 to Russia as soon as possible. G4-based computers will be available in Russia in early November, 1999. Recommended retail prices in Moscow range from US$ 2150 (a model with 350Mhz CPU, 1Mbyte L2 cache, 64Mbytes RAM, 10Gbytes HDD, CD-ROM, PCI-16V video card, 56K modem) to US$ 4197 (450Mhz CPU, 1Mbyte L2 cache, 256Mbytes RAM, 27Gbytes HDD, DVD-RAM drive, AGP-16V video card, ZIP drive). Another product to be shipped to Russia in mid-November is the new family of iMac computers announced on October 5, 1999. The family includes iMac, iMac DV (Digital Video) and iMac DV Special Edition models. The entry-level iMac model is equipped with PowerPC G3 350MHz processor, 64 Mbytes RAM (expandable up to 512 Mbytes), 6 Gbytes HDD, ATI Rage 128 VR 2D/3D video adapter, new sound system, and new CD-ROM drive with improved trayless loading mechanism. It also supports AirPort wireless Internet access solution. Recommended retail price in Moscow is US$ 1244. iMac DV is a more advanced model featuring the PowerPC G3 400MHz CPU, DVD-ROM, 10 Gbytes HDD, and two FireWire ports for data exchange at speeds up to 400 Mbps. The computer is shipped with iMovie, new Apple software for professional film production. Recommended retail price in Moscow is US$ 1556.
