Linux, Inc. starts its operation in Russia

The new company Linux, Inc., has officially started its operation in Saint-Petersburg city in Russia. As may be guessed from its name, the company will distribute and support the commercial version of Linux operating system. It was underscored at the press conference that the company will be oriented towards attracting Western investments and tight cooperation with RedHat company.

This June the company has already released the first CD-ROM from the new Linux Cyrillic Edition series. The product is completely localized and destined for the Russia market. The disk contains the complete version of RedHat Linux 6.0 with all patches and additions made up to June 10, 1999.

Further plans of the company call for building a new version of Linux distribution, cooperation with Sun Microsystems in localizing its StarOffice suite and its promotion at the Russian market, and publishing Linux documentation in Russian.

================= Intel-based computational facilities come into operation in Nizhniy Novgorod University

Intel office for CIS and Baltic countries announced that official presentation of the new Center of Computer Simulation has been held in Nizhniy Novgorod State University (NNSU) in Russia. All computers of the Center are based on Intel processors. The Center was built using a complete computer laboratory solution, shipped to NNSU within the framework of Intel academic program. It includes a Pentium III-based server and 14 PCs, as well as printer, scanner and all corresponding software.

Intel office for CIS and Baltic countries is cooperating with NNSU since 1998, when five stipends were established for students of this university. Since CIS and Baltic countries were included into Intel academic program, a number of universities and colleges have become its participants. Among them there are Moscow State University, Moscow State Technical University, Moscow Engineering and Physical Institute, Moscow Physical and Technical Institute, Nizhniy Novgorod State University, National Technical University of Ukraine, Belarus State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics. In course of the program Intel has shipped them more than 20 computer laboratories with its total cost being about US$ 1,5 mln.
