Four Russian universities obtain Intel grants

Intel office in CIS and Baltic countries has summarized the results of the contest of introduction of up-to-date computer technologies into education and scientific research. The contest was announced this April within the framework of the corporate academic program, which is under way since 1997. Four leading Russian technical universities, including Moscow State University (MSU), Moscow State Technical University (MSTU), Moscow Physical and Technical Institute (MPhTI), and Moscow Engineering and Physical Institute (MEPhI), received five Intel grants totaling about US$ 300,000. In September the company will ship them computer classes and workstations based on the newest Intel Pentium III and Pentium III Xeon processors.

Among winners of the contest there are two MSU departments, with total number of participants from this university reaching 23. Department of Chemistry presented its project "High-performance computer technologies in physical chemistry", and the project from Department of Computer Mathematics and Cybernetics was entitled "Educational and research laboratory of computer graphics and computer vision". MEPhI presented 12 applications, with the winner being "Educational and scientific computer laboratory of medical physics and ecology" from the Department of Experimental and Theoretical Physics. At the top of the list of eleven projects submitted by MSTU was "Intel information center in MSTU library". Five projects were presented by MPhTI, with the program "Study and development of technologies and systems for remote education and scientific research in inter-disciplinary projects" being the winner.
