LANIT company, a Russian value-added reseller and a specialist in networking solutions, announced its new program for connecting multi-storey residential houses to Internet. The project, dubbed Internet House, will provide round-the clock Internet access for any groups of individuals and/or organizations which are not satisfied by quality of existing dial-up service. The company will provide a turnkey solution to end users, including making permanent Internet connection (e.g., by leased lines) for the entire building, deploying a local area network within the building with Ethernet outlets in residents' apartments, technical support and consultations. It was a year ago when cooperation between LANIT and NBM-Stroiservice, a local construction company, was begun. The goal was to install the Internet House solution in a newly built residential campus. The system was put into operation on May 1, 1999. It utilizes networking equipment from a number of vendors, including Cisco, 3Com and RIT. The leased line for the project was provided by Golden Line, Russian telco operator and a partner of LANIT. The company says that its Internet House technology drastically reduces the cost of adding new subscribers and makes it very flexible due to various uplink options and networking hardware. The cost of connecting to the network ranges from US$ 190 to 700, depending upon the number of users, type of uplink connection and structure of the specific solution. Monthly rate is US$ 35 to 65. The system provides unlimited Internet access, as well as personal e-mail address for each member of the subscriber's family. Making LANs in residential buildings, Infoart notes, has been a hot topic in Moscow for the last two years. Currently there are a few hundreds of intra-building and even campus-scale networks in the residential districts of the city, with the biggest of them spanning over 10 km and serving hundreds of users. Up to recently, however, most efforts in this field were done by either Internet providers or by users themselves. LANIT project is the first to be initiated by a well-known VAR and the first to be implemented in course of construction of new building rather than putting cables in the existing and inhabited ones.
