In course of the BrainShare Russia '99 conference, held this June in St.-Petersburg, Demos and Novell announced their plans on integration of new Novell software into the NetStar project, which is being carried out by Demos. The latter company is one of the oldest Internet and networking service providers in Russia. NetStar project will provide high-speed Internet access at "last mile" stage and optimize investments for building a scaleable, secure and conveniently managed networking environment.

NetStar is an asymmetric or mixed Internet access solution, which provides high throughput by utilizing additional satellite channel for downward transmission as required and separating upward and downward channels. The downward connection is based on Intelsat 604 digital satellite channel which provides up to 2 Mbps bandwidth. IP traffic is encapsulated into digital DVB stream using MPEG-2 algorithm, with actual throughput up to 1.6 Mbps depending upon the channel load. Upward requests are transmitted by means of conventional dial-up lines.

======= AVP in France

A big presentation of AntiViral Toolkit Pro (AVP) set of products took place in Paris, France. The products are developed by Kaspersky Lab from Russia, a worldwide-recognized specialist in antiviral protection. AVP solutions have been known in France for a long time, as they have been available there since 1994. To further promote it at the local market, Kaspersky Lab signed a partnership agreement with Alphasys company in February 1999. It took Kaspersky Lab specialists about three months to provide French versions of their products, which were demonstrated now.

Alphasys is an expert in antiviral protection and a member of French Informatique Development (ID) group of companies. The latter specializes in computer security and provides turnkey security solutions for corporate customers. ID have been distributing antiviral software from the leading developers for a few years. Recent marketing and technical analysis, comparative tests of various products and other investigations led the company to the decision on recommending the AVP solution as a preferable one to its customers.
