Aquarius company, a Russian hardware vendor, announced kick-off of a nation-wide program for testing, correcting and certifying personal computers for Y2K compatibility. The program is carried out in cooperation with ASI-Service, an independent testing lab. The program allows any user, both individual and corporate, to download testing software from Aquarius website (www.aq.ru) free of charge. This product is developed by ASI-Service and officially certified for Y2K compatibility. It tests the PC for Y2K compatibility, provides a brief resume and generates a report in a file. Positive conclusion means that the hardware completely satisfies the requirements of the State Committee on Telecommunications (Goskomtelecom, formerly Goskomsvyaz) on this issue. Once any bugs and drawbacks are found, which may result in failure, the user may send the report file to Aquarius and obtain detailed description of the problem and recommendations on solving it. This service is about US$ 5. Then Aquarius proposes its services to fix these problems, up to performing a full-scale upgrade of PCs if necessary. Testing and possible upgrade are following by drawing a protocol, which is a mandatory document for applying for Year 2000 Compliance certificate for a corporate IT system. The program is effective since July 5, 1999. The companies are going to make it nation-wide; to this end, a network of ASI-Service offices is now being established in all regions of Russia.
