Ericsson upgrades mobile communications in Novgorod

A TDMA-based cellular communications network has been put into commercial operation in Novgorod city in Russia. The network is built using Ericsson products.

Back in the 1997, GTS company from USA, one of the top international telco operators, purchased 100% share in Novgorod Telecommunications. In April 1998 the company launched its cellular network into operation. Initially, the network used AMPS-800 system by Lucent Technologies. Yet the increasing competition in this field led the company to the decision on upgrading the network to digital TDMA solution. (At the moment, there are also GSM-900 and NMT-450 cellular networks in Novgorod.) Ericsson was chosen to provide the system.

The new solution results in higher quality of communications and an enhanced set of services. Novgorod Telecom subscribers can now use call redirection, call identifier and anti-identifier, multi-user conferencing, call waiting and blocking, etc. The company says they are also protected against unauthorized access and may use roaming services in many cities within Russia and abroad. Since June, automatic roaming with Moscow and a number of other cities is also available. The system provides stable communication in Novgorod city and its suburbs, as well as in Staraya Roussa and Valday.

It will be the first time, Infoart notes, when the new MSC 300 switch and its v4.0 software will be applied in Russia.
