Ericsson and Mobil TeleSystems to perform joint trial of MicroGSM system in Russia

On June 7, 1999, Ericsson and Mobile TeleSystems announced their decision to begin joint trial of the experimental MicroGSM system in Russia. The two companies believe that commercial deployment of the MicroGSM will make cellular communication services available not only in megapolices but also in small towns. It will also make mobile communications far more affordable for a broad community of customers.

The MicroGSM network is distinguished by low start-up capacity, compact design and simplicity of maintenance. On the other side, flexible modular architecture of the mini-switch provides scalability up to a few thousands of subscribers. The system also provides the full set of GSM Phase 2+ functions, including global roaming, toll-quality voice communication, confidentiality, data exchange, etc.

The solution proposed by Ericsson is very attractive for Russian cellular operators since it allows to minimize initial investments for building cellular networks.

The Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) company is the Russia's largest cellular operator in GSM-900 standard. Currently it serves more than 190,000 subscribers. Its network covers the major portion of the Moscow region, and the company has already proceeded to building cellular networks in the other regions and cities of Russia. In particular, GSM-900 networks have been built in Kostroma region, Tver region and Republic of Komi.
