Golden Line, one of the major Russian telco operators, demonstrated the capabilities of joint application of ADSL and ATM technologies for Internet access at Svyaz/Expo Comm'99 show in Moscow on May 11 to 15, 1999. The Golden Line backbone network and the ADSL connection up to the company's booth at the show were used to provide city-wide phone communication, high-speed Internet access (via the Relline network), real-time broadcast of two TV channels, and video-on-demand services. (The latter is a joint project of Vesty TV company, Artechnics company, Golden Line and Relline; details are available at www.center.ru). The technology of integrated ATM traffic services, demonstrated at the show, is planned to be at the core of a new public data network in Moscow. The project will be carried out in 1999-2000 by Moscow City Telephone Network (MGTS), Golden Line parent company. Golden line will take an active part in it. The new system will build up the existing MGTS subscriber infrastructure and Golden Line superposed ATM network with the existing automatic network management system. As the "last mile" solution, ADSL technology will be applied, thus allowing to provide broadband data access while retaining the voice frequency channel for the existing analog phones. The new solution will drastically increase the range of MGTS services. New services will include multimedia-on-demand, broadband Internet access, building virtual private networks (VPNs), e-commerce, remote education, remote health care, etc. Source: InfoArt News Agency
