Russian software vendors launch new e-commerce project

Two Russian vendors, LANIT and DEMOS, announced start of a new joint project on developing a replicable e-commerce system. Internet commerce, standing for application of the most up-to-date networking technologies to selling goods and services, is rising dynamically all over the world. By the moment, Internet solutions play an active role in certain fields of trade, e.g., in trade by catalogs (OTTO, etc.) or selling books. Analysists estimate the current volume of trade by catalogs at US$ 240 bln., with US$ 6 bln. being contributed exclusively by e-sales. Only a couple of years ago, the latter digit was virtually equal to zero.

New technologies put a basement for revolutionary new approach to regional wholesale and retail system, in particular, to an intra-city trade system.

Preliminary analysis of the market of value-added services in Russia (and, specifically, in Moscow region), as well of the Internet providing market, reveals the possibility to deploy projects in this field in rather short terms, e.g. in 8 to 10 months.

The principal goal of the joint LANIT and DEMOS project is building a universal e-commerce system based on Internet/intranet. The system should fit the needs of trade companies in any field and should be adaptable for a certain corporate customer in the shortest possible terms.

The process of building the customized solution will be split in two stages. The first stage, referred to as "light" solution, will supply the trade companies with databases of the trade control system and simplified tools for access to major maintenance lists, to system of making and processing orders. It also allows customers to access the catalog of products and the system of making orders. At that stage, the databases can be hosted at both customers' own Internet servers and servers of the Internet provider.

The second stage is a full-featured solution, which provides the seller with a complete trade control system. At this stage all databases, including the catalog of the seller's goods and application server, are located at Internet servers belonging to the company.

LANIT company will be the principal contractor and executor of the project, while DEMOS will act as an Internet service provider.

The two companies say that negotiations are under way with some trade companies, banks having experience in processing payment transactions, and potential investors.

LANIT (LAboratory of New Information Technologies) holding is one of the biggest Russian companies specializing in information technologies. DEMOS is one of the major Internet service providers in Russia.
