Russian power industry reports year 2000 readiness

The Control Center of the United Power System of Russia says it does not expect any difficulties related to Y2K problem.

As reported by the vice director of engineering of the Center Vladimir Ornov, 54 out of 74 principal computer centers, which control the entire system, require only a minor upgrade of their facilities. They are virtually ready to the beginning of the next millennium, the official highlighted.

The rest 20 centers require more drastic replacement of computer hardware and software. All these efforts are planned to be completed by as early as August 1999.

According to V. Ornov, 80% of 300 to 350 local control centers, which directly manage the power distribution systems, are ready or nearly ready to year 2000. The rest 20% require some hardware and software upgrade.

Vladimir Ornov also mentioned that the United Power System of Russia is being somewhat anxious about the situation at nuclear power plants, which do not report to the company, and in power systems of Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan. The reason is, first of all, the lack of information about their Y2K readiness available to the company. Potential problems on nuclear power plants and in power industries of the neighboring states may negatively affect the stability of Russian power system.
