Moscow Cellular Communications (MCC), one of the key cellular operators in Moscow, announced that the total expenses on upgrading its hardware and software for year 2000 readiness are estimated at approximately US$ 1 million. The company says it has approved a special program for solving the millennium problem, and the major portion of the program is already completed by now. MCC plans call for completion of the entire Year 2000 program by September 1999. All upgrades are being performed exclusively at the level of selected segments of the network and do not cause any inconveniences for the customers. As highlighted by MCC commercial vice director Alexander Esikov, the Y2K problem has never been posed at the customer's level. Any type of cellular phones used by MCC customers will proceed to the next millennium without any problems. By the moment, the company has completely checked up its hardware and software for their correct operation after January 1, 2000. Testing done by MCC specialists confirmed that its communication centers, base stations and 75% of computer facilities are ready for operation in the next millennium. Checking has also revealed the Y2K-sensitive components of the network and allowed to arrange their upgrades. In particular, hardware and software correction and/or replacement turned out to be necessary for billing systems and for voice mail facilities. MCC is carrying out its Year 2000 activity in tight cooperation with Ericsson, Hewlett-Packard, Compaq, Glenayre, and a number of other companies. Source: InfoArt News Agency
