Russian technology at the core of NEC GPS card for mobile computers
Japanese corporation NEC began OEM testing of GPS receiver based on Russian
technology. The receiver is a PCMCIA card, with its hardware and software
designed by Russian company SPIRIT in its research center in Moscow. The
GPS receiver was developed by SPIRIT for highly dynamical applications,
like automotive navigation.
According to SPIRIT officials, its proprietary technology allows to use as
little as approximately one thousand switches per channel, while the
conventional receivers need about 10,000 switches per channel. Thus, the
SPIRIT design allows to built the receiver based on more cheap and
power-saving chipset.
