Russian Minister of Nuclear Energy makes a statement on Year 2000 problem
By no means can the millennium problem run outwards from Russian nuclear
industry enterprises and cause any damage, either economic or
technological, which might exceed the expenses needed for its prevention.
This announcement was done was done by Eugeniy Adamov, the head of Russian
Ministry of Nuclear Energy (Minatom), at his press-conference in Moscow. He
highlighted that there are "no systems" in his industry which might require
huge investments to prevent potential problems inside or outside the
enterprises.
On the other hand, the minister recognized the fact some problems are
possible with "operator advisers". As explained by Eugeniy Adamov, Russian
nuclear power plants do not immediately rely on the computers for control
purposes; instead, the computers provide recommendations for plant
operators. "We are steadily carrying out the program to eliminate these
problems, too," said the official.
Eugeniy Adamov proposed to exchange visits of American experts to one of
the Russian power plants and Russian experts to a US power plant to see if
there are any gaps in solving the Y2K problem at each other side.
