Gazprom makes a statement on year 2000 readiness
Officials of the Gazprom, the largest Russian gas company, believe that
year 2000 problem will have no effect upon gas export to CIS (Commonwealth
of Independent States) countries, as well as to East and West Europe. The
announcement was done in response to statements done by some Western
experts. These experts expressed their doubts in Gazprom ability to
guarantee gas supply to its foreign partners by virtue of the anticipated
malfunctioning of computer systems at the beginning of the new millennium.
The company highlights the fact that it has virtually solved the Y2K
problem by now. In particular, new software solutions for monitoring,
control and communication systems are tested and ready for regular
exploitation. To provide reliable information exchange within the entire
area of Gazprom activity, the company utilizes a satellite communication
system. Virtually all monitoring and control systems of its gas
transportation facilities are now equipped with 5th generation computers.
Cazprom officials also say that the company's board of directors has
approved the program of priority funding for the most urgent efforts on
eliminating the Y2K program.
